If you asked any Greek-American in Queens about the Nikoloudis family, they would liken them to a monarchy that built their empire on gambling and violence. Alexio Nikoloudis was the patriarch that had moved his wife and two children from Santorini, Greece to New York in pursuit of status and wealth. Alexio became embedded within the Greek Mafia, which had found its fortune in illegal gambling rings in various casinos. Charming and eloquent, Alexio managed to elevate his position to Underboss of the Mafia, much to the changrin of his wife Daphne. Her main concern were the safety of their two children Silas and Elle. Before she could even consider leaving her husband and fleeing back home to their native Greece, both Daphne and twelve year old Elle were snatched at night in their home by foreign hitmen.
These hitmen were hired by a rival Italian Mafia set on acquiring additional turf in the city in exchange for the return of Elle and Daphne Nikoloudis. As Underboss, Alexio had to submit to his superior's strategy, which included calling their enemy's bluff. In the end, Daphne was executed for their defiance, a traumatizing event that Elle was forced to witness. After showing proof of Elle's life and the demise of Daphne, the Greek Mafia relented and demanded the safe return of the twelve year old girl as a display of "good faith". Most knew the death of Elle would cause outright war between both Mafias due to the Greek Don favoring the young girl as the daughter he never had.
The "safe" return of Elle relieved her father and brother, but she was no longer naive or ignorant of what her father did for a living. Alexio enlisted his daughter in self-defense classes so that she could have some peace of mind and feel more secure. While Elle had excelled in her studies of martial arts, there was nothing that could quell the resentment and anger she had towards her father. She did her best to persuade her older brother to leave with her, but Silas stood by Alexio and the business that took their mother from them. Eventually, Alexio would have to answer for his crimes and was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison. Silas was tasked with looking after the seventeen year old Elle, but she had the smarts to pack her bags and get as far away as she could from the city.
Not even two weeks after running away from home, Silas was executed as a means to ensure Alexio did not rat on his former boss. Spilling any secrets would mean they would find Elle and have the Hudson claim her, as well. Elle was more than equipped to take care of herself, though. Her usual m.o. was never staying in one place for very long, and she didn't use her legal name. She picked up exotic dancing as a means to swindle men out of tens of thousands, and by the time she got into escort work in Boston, Elle had procured a decent amount of savings. While she still was skiddish, Elle grew tired of not being able to plant roots and no longer wanted to be bound by her father's mistakes.
Using a good portion of her savings, Elle put money into a South Boston dive bar called "Dirty Dog". Even though she is considered a silent partner of the establishment, her main responsibility there is as the managing bartender. Elle keeps the regulars happy by not prying into their business and meetings. Even still, she isn't without her own secrets either. During "after hours", Elle sponsors bare-knuckled fights in the basement of Dirty Dog. The added income and entertainment has officially marked Elle's return to a familiar underworld, but this time it is all on her terms.
